How to Prevent Blocked Drain Emergency Plumbing

Blocked drains are a nuisance to our plumbing, and to our surroundings. Small scale obstructions in drainpipes can cause slow drainage of plumbing fixtures while large scale clogs may be responsible to no drainage, sewer backups, and overflowing toilets. Without prompt plumbing repair small scale jams can escalate into costly water related plumbing emergencies.

Placing strainers over drain openings in sinks, bathtubs and showers catch debris and solid matter from falling down the drainpipe while letting liquids trickle through. Covering drain openings with strainers and cleaning them periodically, is your first line of defense against blocked drains of all scales. Yet strainers alone are not enough at preventing drainage emergency plumbing troubles.

The three main components needed in combating blocked drains and stubborn clogs in our plumbing's piping & fitting are boiling water, vinegar and baking soda. Weekly dozes of vinegar and baking soda will go a long way at preventing blocked Drain emergencies.

The following home plumbing solutions will keep your drain clear and clean from grease and fatty acids, and your plumbing fixtures draining adequately. Avoid using the following methods if you have already poured in commercial drain openers:

Grease
Dissolve 1 lb of washing soda in 3 gallons of boiling water, and pour the mixture down the drain to break up grease buildup. Contact your local plumber Fairfax County should the solution not work on very heavy grease obstructions.

Fatty Acids
Mix 1/2 a cup of baking soda and 1/2 a cup of white vinegar together and pout down the drain. After a few minutes run carefully boiling water down the drain. Baking soda and vinegar will break down fatty acids build up into soap and glycerin, while boiling water will flush them down the drain.

General Clogs
Pour 1/2 a cup of salt and 1/2 a cup of baking soda down the drain, and follow with 6 cups of boiling water. Baking soda and salt break through the clog while boiling water helps dissolve the residue.

The above methods are part of your plumbing preventive maintenance routine – clogs that have been left to collect more debris and grow in size will probably not respond to such home plumbing solutions. If a plunger and a plumber's snake fail to lift the obstruction - too late to undo the clog, call in your local plumbers in Washington DC or North Virginia to relief the drain.
